Chalice Lighter Call Winter 2010

CMwD-CL-paypal-header750x90

January 2010

Dear Central Midwest District Chalice Lighter,

Since its inception, the Chalice Lighters program has provided funding to growth projects in almost 40 congregations. We are pleased to announce our Winter 2010 Chalice Lighter Call will support the DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church in Naperville, Illinois.  Serving Central Midwest District congregations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin, Chalice Lighters grants provide funds for congregations to add professional staff, build new or enhanced space, accomplish public relations and outreach programs, or to fund new congregation starts.

The funds granted to the Naperville church will support their efforts to expand their outreach and public relations program. This effort is closely tied to the congregation’s intention to increase its membership and expand its physical space. The Dupage UU Church has demonstrated its potential for numerical growth, as well as their capacity for development of their organization and systems to accommodate the growth.  In addition, the congregation has shown their thoughtfulness about this process by shifting the times of their services in order to balance attendance, while remaining ready to add a third service if deemed necessary.

  • UUSC and UUA Launch Joint Relief Effort for Haiti

In the wake of devastation wrought by the earthquake which struck the island of Haiti on January 12, 2010, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) and the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) are launching a joint relief effort to bring aid to the impoverished island nation.

  • Beacon Press Publishes First Books in "The King Legacy" Series

"Stride Toward Freedom:  The Montgomery Story" had been unavailable for almost a decade.  King's unparalleled historical account of the first successful large-scale application of nonviolent resistance in America  is now 'must' reading for a new generation."Where Do We Go from Here:  Chaos or Community?" had been unavailable for more than a decade.  King's final book offers an astute analysis of American race relations and the movement after a decade of civil rights efforts.
